I went to the GW store today and picked up the rulebook and Black Templars codex. I would have spent all my Christmas money there (over $700) given half a chance.

You can get a perfectly viable army for about 400 bucks. Possibly less depending what you build it around and the points you're aiming to field.

I don't think I'm ready to buy an army yet but I bought the books to get familiar with things so I'm prepared.

I really wanted the duffel bag with the imperial aquilla embroidered on it but I resisted.

i slowly had an army it took me a year but i finally have a decent sized one and i have more stuff to paint and build still

And Apulo if you look into Vassal, which I talked about in another thread somewhere. It provides a way to play the tabletop via the program, which means you can design an army and play with it without purchasing anything. Then when you find what you like THEN you can buy guys.

Didn't they take down the 40K mod? I tried downloading it a couple of weeks ago and couldn't find the mod.

I believe they got sued because you don't have to have models to play the Vassal version of the game.
