Because they are the cloth from which the others are cut. Let's say that the 40k universe is an action movie, and the main groups of Marines with their own Codecies (Space Wolves, Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Ultramarines, Black Templars) are Spec Ops characters in this movie.

The Space Wolf would be the scruffy grizzled guy that talks a lot of smack, possibly Spetznaz. The Dark Angel would be the silent guy that keeps to himself, possibly French Foreign Legion. The Blood Angel would be the guy that rubs people the wrong way with the tricked out weapon, possibly SAS or Delta Force. The Black Templar would be the guy with the pronounced religious overtone, possibly Shayetet 13. And the Ultramarine would be the guy with the high and tight haircut, shined boots, and creased BDUs, possibly Green Beret.

Read Know No Fear if you haven't already. It makes the Ultramarines much more interesting IMHO. Also something that many authors seem to forget is that the Ultras are not stupid. They prefer to use the Codex but no blindly. If they did that they wouldn't even be following it properly as outside the box thinking is supposed to be encouraged in the Codex when it makes sense. I'm not a fan of the Ultras but I find too many people put them down for the wrong reasons.

I just finished "Know No Fear" and it makes the Ultrasmurfs look decent and unique. Aside from the books about Ventris, who is not a regular Ultramarine, it's the only bit of fiction that makes them look respectable.

'Fall of Damnos' by Nick Kyme - not a bad read. They're all acting like Emperors children and going for glory rather than being codex based automatons. Nice intro to the Necrons too.

Excuse me. Where the hell is the Raven Guard in that? Raven Guard are like the boss of Spec Ops. All the other SM Chapters are just like "LETS BLOW THE SHIT OUT OF THEM WITH OUR BOLTERS THEN CUT THEM INTO TINY PIECES WITH OUT CHAINSWORDS!" and the Raven Guard "No lets slice their throats from behind >=)" My point has been made. *Nerd Rage Mode dissengaged*

There is no Codex: Raven Guard. They are a sub part of the Codex: Space Marine which is the Ultramarine's sourcebook.

Still, Raven Gaurd aer kick ass, and by all rights they should have their own Codex since they're fighting style is SO much more different then most the Marines. My point was merely that the Raven Guard are a kick ass Spec Ops Chapter nothing more. It was based upon my own opinion, even though yours was based upon who had codexs. Plus my comment was ment as more of a funny remark, not true offendment, I'm use to the Raven Guard being ignored.
