Do I need a copy of the rulebook to play? I'm sure I can find my Black Templar codex but it might be outdated. I'm not sure.

Does it have Blood Angels? And by 5th edition rulebook Im guessing you mean the current one?

The one that is soon to be replaced by unnecessary 6th edition, yes. And what do you mean does it have Blood Angels? VASSAL? VASSAL has all codex chapters and armies in the 40k module. (Space Marines, Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Black Templars, Imperial Guard, Grey Knights, Witch Hunters, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Chaos Space Marines, Chaos Daemons, Tau, Necrons, Tyranids). And JC since I know you seem to adore those massive games VASSAL even supports Apocalypse with Titan units and the like.

Those would be for Battlefleet Gothic. The first being the main program which is necessary no matter what. The second is the module itself which you download, unzip and then import via Vassal the main program.

If people get interested and active in using VASSAL, and using VASSAL correctly. I stress this as in not violating the rules Crucias set up for the forum in regards to sharing information. I know we all want to share stuff, but Crucias is playing it safe and anyone in his position would do the same. But if people get into this and get to understand it, Crucias and I have discussed the idea of doing a tournament in the future with a possibly enticing payout.

Just an addition to Nox's post there.

We are allowing the posting of some rules in order to kick start learning. There is, however, no restrictions on what you pass between yourselves verbally over the Teamspeak server (or XBL etc).

So read the AoBR quick start guide (currently living inside Fenrir's post) and then learn through playing a lesson with people who know the rules.

how do you actually pic kyour units? ive got mine wworking but i cant get any units on the field
