I really would love a new Tau codex, but I think they will kick butt again with the 6 edition rule right now without a new codex. What do you all think?

I don't see why not, shooting got better, and that happens to be what Tau do best.

The tau are certified as the shootiest army out there. Even the guard, with decent rolling get hammered into submission by the Tau guns. This edition brings many useful little touches to a Tau army. The main weakness is the Hammerhead is now a little softer, but this is also compensated for by the fact it's gun now does +2(!) on damage rolls. so basically, I think we'll see a return to the Gunline Tau armies of old. Lots of Fire Warriors, Battlesuits and the like. Basically, the Tau are a solid choice and are still going to be a lot of fun to play in 6th Edition.

Meh. Tau got some boosts with Overwatch, random charge distance and the boost to rapid fire weapons. However, their codex is still as old as they get so there's still problems you'll encounter. Fire Warriors at BS 3 isn't mega useful, Jet Pack random distance is a blessing and a curse, and plenty of armies like Guard and Tyranids can out-shoot the Tau if built properly.

However, I still think Tau will do pretty well this edition, moreso than 5th at least. Also, Nox, check your rule book again, flamer weapons do d3 auto hits in Overwatch.

If your Fire Warriors are always shooting BS3 you're not doing it right. Markerlights solve that one right off the bat. The Tau Codex is old, but it's always been effective. Just ask anyone who's played a well-used Tau force. I still stand by my judgement that you just don't out-shoot the Tau, you have to be smart to beat the mobility and sheer volume of high strength shots. Also, rapid firing 15'' (finally!) feels right.

I didn't have to check my rulebook, I had to find the footnote in a different section, which is poorly written. You don't write a rule saying "templates cannot overwatch" then 20 pages later go "templates can overwatch and they do this."

Do you make Overwatch from vehicles? I'm not sure, but I'm fairly certain they'd be charging the Orks, not the Trukk.

You can overwatch out of a transport if the transport is open-topped.

Without my Big Rule Book to hand, I do occasionally forget a rule or two. The cool thing about the internet is you can cross check your facts then post like you knew all along. ;)

Markerlights? Unless you want to pay the points for Pathfinders (Who are basically Fire Warriors with Pulse Carbines, except they'd rather use markerlights instead) or relegate a Drone to it (who's like, BS 2-3, maybe) then I'm not too sure about that. You can give your Shas'ui markerlights, but as unit-shooting is simultaneous the markerlight would apply after the Shas'ui shoots.

Crisis suits aren't necessarily scary either, with T4, 2 wounds, and a 3+ save. Jetpacks are a wee bit faster, if you roll average or higher, but that doesn't do much, IMHO. A T3 4+ save Fire Warrior isn't super hard to kill either, go ask Eldar Dire Avengers. And with most cover being relegated to 5+, their chances aren't much better.

I've seen well-played Tau. Guard, GK's to some extent, and even Nids when kitted out-right outperform everything but Broadsides, who are too expensive as is.

Tau aren't bad, for sure. This edition gave them a much needed boost. But they still have some major problems (mostly with points costs) that need to be re-worked in the new book.

Your points are very valid, Leech. I hope the next book has lots of interesting new things for us Xenos players to get excited about. Eldar book first though, please!
