You'r a very good painter to say you'r just starting out, may i suggest that if you want to define its features that you lightly brush over it in obe of the many inks? I use brown ink for my tyranids, ill post a pic up next time i go in the loft and get them :)

I don't think Farther's For Justice will allow you in the protest where you will be running around on a really high roof while pissed off your face

Wahes and inks are EASY to use, like over the brown on the guardsmens trousers I would you Agrax Earthshade, tge wash just falls right into place were you want it.

I have to agree that washes are very handy. I use them extensively on my skeleton warriors and my orks. I prefer to keep my orks skin tone dark though, so i only go upto snot green (yes i still use the old colours atm) which I think looked pretty decent. I need to redo them though because I haven't painted for YEARS

That's a great start Ultramar! Better than my first miniatures at least =p

I'll go ahead and parrot what everyone else is saying too. Washes are AMAZINGLY helpful if you want to achieve good results quickly. I'd recommend Agrax Earthshade for general-purpose shading, it really is a great wash to have.

So I was able to pick up a metal Captain Sicarius model (eww, smelly Finecast) and I was so excited I started working on in this morning. Here's about 2 hours worth of effort into the model =/

Flesh Tearers are growing! Next on the list are the Space Hulk Termies, 5 Sniper scouts, and some Sternguard.

I am loving the chipping and scratch effect, but might I recommend that you do somthing to the red , it's too bright for flesh tearers, I'd put some Nuln Oil (watered down a little) over all the red if I was you.

Oooh, Flesh Tearers!

Love the shoulderpads and the hazard stripe effects on the chainswords. Fantastic stuff there.

The Camera flash kinda screws with it. They are more a Dr. Pepper red than the pictures suggest.
Posted ImagePosted Image
they are primed black, mechite red, red gore, Badab black wash, Red gore drybrush, real light blood red dry brush and highlight then another light badab Black ink wash. Comes out Dr. Pepper red.

I need to fix that flash. It's toning the colors wrong, and bleeding out details. True story-the pilot of the Stormraven has a Flesh Tearer shoulderpad despite the fact no one will ever see it in the cockpit....
As for the paint chiping, in some novel, it is noted that Flesh Tearer equipment looks derelict, but upon close inspection is in pristine operating condition. They just have no time or need for fresh paint. So I try to incorporate that into every model in some way. Keep it good enough to fight in. My Space Marine Flesh Tearer rocks battle damaged armor most the time.
