I've got about 15,000pts of Imperial Navy myself (at last count...) with a more reasonable 1,500pts of Eldar.

Desolator Battleship
Terminus Est
Planet Killer
8 Chaos Cruisers
24 Chaos Assorted Escorts
3 Hiveships
9 Cruisers
24 Assorted Escorts
My Tyranids were homemade, they looked much better than the official ones. I had to sell them for food money 2 years ago now, but BFG will always remain my favorite miniature game.

Never played BFG, but I have always been interested in it. Would you care to help a newbie?
BFG is easy to learn, the problem is getting a copy of the rulebook. It's 30 GBP and there is also an expansion called "Armada"

The game has very few rules overall and once you get the hang of special orders it moves very fast. Think of it as two naval fleets WW1-2 era fighting each other and not space combat. Turns are like 40k with move then shoot (with a few boarding action assaults tossed in) then switch player and repeat. Going Chaos or Imperial gets you the cheaper plastic cruisers though for the most part you only need 4 big ships and 6 little ones for a decent fleet (with exceptions for race of course).
Basic cruisers will move 20cm and shoot about 5 or 6 dice worth of guns each turn if able. Most cruisers have 8 hits with lights at 6 and battleships at 12. Escorts are the little guys and they have only one hit. Non human races tend to twist those numbers alot with Eldar being faster with fewer hits and Orks being more random for example.
Any fleet you'd like to know more about?

Hmm seems they took down the PDF versions of the rulebook. It used to be free from GW!
Yeah, so unless you can find another officially hosted repository of those rulebooks they count as illegal to distribute again. I believe they listed the PDFs when the rulebook was out of print, now they are printing them to order it's for sale again.
Tyranids and chaos please.
Also which BFG vassal do I get?
Please discuss VASSAL in the VASSAL section. There is also a link to the modules there

Chaos will at first glance look to be flat out better than the Imperial Navy based on points costs of their ships compared to their speed and firepower. They may be faster (25cm instead of 20cm for most cruisers) and generally have more guns with longer range but lack the durability of the Imperials. Imperial ships have a higher front armour which doesn't mean much late game but allows them to set up strong starting positions.
Combined with their torpedoes (which Chaos lack for the most part) they can force Chaos fleets into positions that deny them their advantages while closing to ideal Imperial firing range. The Imperial fleet tends to operate best with ships in squadrons supporting each other while Chaos ships tend to be fine on their own. Close formation can help Chaos ships too but less overall synergy.
It's hard to describe in the right words why a Chaos fleet acting like an Imperial fleet isn't as good despite their higher speed and firepower but that's how I've seen it played out on tabletop. Maybe it is just the threat of torpedoes since they can cause more damage to bunched up formations (and the Imperial higher front armour allows them to wade through enemy torps with less worry) but over all the Chaos fleet does have a more lone wolf style of play.
Long story short, try to circle the other fleet and get them at long range before closing for the kill. This works well enough against everyone besides Eldar (who require totally different tactics than anyone else) and Necrons (the "broken" faction in the game who do what everyone else does but better).

And now I have it and VBFG_2-2 installed as well as 40k. I'm not sure I will be able to teach anyone how to play (no mike and typing rules examples out will be tedious), but if you want to play against me in BFG on vassal let me know. That said I'll likely only be able to play on weekends.

That's what Apulo and I do.
Yep works well but we have people who don't have XBL, for that we have Teamspeak now. So we can rise to any occasion
