This is for those who have not played this type of game before.

Recap on how to create a character, get it set in your mind and examples of combat ect.

I have been RPing for many years and often when running a game I forget that some people are not used to it. So was planning on doing an intro to the way "I" run things. Those who have played my games before like the way I do things some others struggle so I thought that if I take it back to the balls and bones of it then it may help people who would like me to run games for them in the future.

Strating right from:

Creating a character.

Description - Responce - Outcome posting.

Mapping out what is happening about you and what your character is doing.

I hope to be able to explain how I run my Text Based RPGs.

EDIT: Also if people like the style then they may be able to run games that I can join lol (less for me to think about lol)

Scene:

Imperial Guard Training ground. You are all lined up. Fresh new recruits, your uniforms all clean and pressed. Gunnery Sergeant McBrine walks over to you all.

"OK! LISTEN UP LADIES! You will not speak! You will not move! You will not think! I don't care what you think! You think your here to lead armies into great and glorious battle? You think your gonna slay the vile and hideousness of the xenos scum of the universe in the Emperors name!? Well do ya!??"

"Sir Yes Sir!!"

"WELL YOU'RE WRONG! How the Emperors throne are you gonna do all those things when you can't even remember 3! simple! rules!! I said clear as the shine on my boots! Don't think! Don't speak!! Let me make this very simple for you! 3 rules are obviously to much for you! You are no longer in the P,D,F so let me give you just one. You may think you were born to lead, but first you must learn to FOLLOW!!"

He moves to stand before you.

"Who are you Privet!? Answer"

you shout your name

" I did not ask for your name Privet I ask WHO ARE YOU!?"

you seem stumped by his question

" It's quite simple Privet! How am I supposed to mold you into something better than who you are if even you don't know WHO YOU ARE!!"

LoL ok a long way round to put this but the theory is sound. Whenever your making a character you need to know that character almost as well as you know yourself and you can do this very simply.

Ask your self questions:

What is their full name?
How old are they?
Where did they live in the past?
Where do they live now?
Do they have any family?
If they prefer a certain type of weapon why?
Is there anything your character does not like?

You don't need to go too much into detail as long as your confident that you know the "character" you're playing. Remember it's not you out there battling so you have the chance to be totally unique to yourself.

HOW TO POST ROLLS AND OOC COMMENTS

At certain times you will want to talk to the other PLAYERS in the game. This is called Out Of Character conversations OOC. In order to make this apparent you place your text in spoiler tags. this is done by typing:
[spoiler@] whatever text you wish to enter then ending it [@/spoiler] but do not include the @ symbol.

When you post it should look like this.
Spoiler

Often I like to add the element of blind luck to the game. This is done by publicly posting a score between 1-100. The higher your score the better.
This ROLL of the dice can be done by typing:
/@roll 1d100 again removing the @ symbol.

Since this is not an (IC) In Character action the roll is hidden in a spoiler tag.
Spoiler

the only space should be between the roll and the 1d100.

Rolls that are between and including 1-3 are considered Catastrophic Fails and will have dire consequences!
Rolls that are between and including 98-100 are considered Exceptional Success and will have beneficial consequences!

EXAMPLE OF ROLLS USED IN COMBAT

You have been told to report to combat training. Once you turn up you see several pairs of guardsmen all in hand to hand combat with one against the other. Your drill Sergeant approaches you.

"Here you will learn the basics of how to fight. I'm not talking the hive scum bar brawls that your probably used to. I talking the Emperors way to strike down your foes!"

He calls to two guards GILLMAN and HURST and they come to stand in front of you.

"Now they are going to to spar. I want you to watch them."

Combat follows a formula that takes a bit of getting used too but once you have it... easy.

Attacker (Atk)
Attack: Describe your action
Roll: Post your attack roll

Defender (Def)
Roll: Post your defense roll
Responce: Describe the result

If the DEF roll is UNDER the ATK roll then the Attackers action has had the desired effect and you describe what happened to you.
Be creative. If there is a large gap between their attack score and your defense then it is more likely you sustained a greater injury. Let the roll be reflected in your description.

If the DEF roll is OVER the ATK roll then the Defender describes how they have avoided the attack.

This in turn gives them the chance to post a counter attack which in turn makes them the attacker and the other defender rinse and repeat until the combat ends on way or another

EXAMPLE OF COMBAT

Gillman Atk
Turns to face Hurst and quickly in order to catch him off guard kicks out in order to sweep his legs from under him.
Spoiler

Hurst Def
Spoiler

Caught by surprise and finding himself suddenly airborne hits the ground hard his breath exploding from his lungs.

Gillman Atk
Now Hurst is down he quickly follows up with a stamp to the chest.
Spoiler

Hurst Def
Spoiler

Vision blured he begins to regain his breath when the heavy boot pounds the air from his chest once more. This time however he hears several distinctive 'cracks' as it does so.
((note how the difference between the rolls is reflected in the outcome.))

Gillman Atk
Seeing his opportunity he grapples the prone guard in order to get his arm locked.
Spoiler

Hurst Def
Spoiler

Managing to slip Gillmans grip he rolls to the side and regains his feet. This time ready for the next attack.
((Hurst has successfully dodged the attack so is now free to make a counter 'but' holds his ground instead remaining on the defensive.))

Gillman Atk
Taking his time seeing Hurst is in no rush at tangle with someone obviously better than him he stands.
"lol Aw whats the matter Hursty got a boo boo"

With that he aims a straight heel kick to his already damaged ribs.
Spoiler

Hurst Def
Spoiler

Ready for him now, stepping to the inside of his leg he catches his foot and goes to kick away his supporting leg.
Spoiler

((Hurst has successfully dodged, explained how and so, is now free to make a counter attack. This time he does so, by describing the action and posting the atk roll))

Gillman DEF ((note Gillman is now the defender))
Spoiler

((Oh no!! A roll of 3 or lower means a CATASTROPHIC FAIL. This means something really horrid has happened and should be described so))

The kick from Hurst connects just above the kneecap. With all his weight on this one leg it folds backwards with a sickening crunch!! He falls to the floor crying out in agony!! Hurst still holding his other foot.

(( This lets all parties involved know the extent of the damage has resulted in the loss of that legs use.))

Drill Sergeant

"Hold there gentlemen! Hurst, good come back, I thought he had you whipped from the start. Take him to a medic and get him sorted and see to those ribs too!"

((As you see the DS stops the combat there, however in life or death situations it continues till one is dead or has run away.))

At that Hurst helps up Gillman and they move off the mat.

((NOTE:
When you are Attacker it's DESCRIPTION/ROLL
When Defender it's ROLL/DESCRIPTION

IF the Defender wins then they have the opportunity to COUNTER Attack their full post will consist of ROLL/DESCRIPTION - DESCRIPTION/ROLL ))

"Ok Cain, Simms, Gibbson front and centre and bring the training swords!"

Three more guards approach the mat each armed with a solid plas-tech training sword.

((stay tuned for more examples of combat, next: Multiple Opponents! ))
