I'd go with photoshop, its a pain to get used to and master but it yields stunning results for pros.

Here's an example of the awesomeness I hope to achieve on photoshop one day:

Their are a number of routes you can take, and I often use a combination of programs.

If to want crisp vector artwork that you can scale to any size I recommend either Adobe Flash or Adobe Illustrator (Illustrator being the harder one to learn but probably a bit more powerful).

If you want to go the Bitmap route than I Recommend Adobe Photoshop, you can import and export between the 3 programs with varying degrees of success.

For a cheaper but powerful route (black and white shading with screen tones) manga comic style I recommend Manga Studio Ex. It's got tools for creating comics such as speech bubbles, frames, screen tones various brushes and It also allows you to import/export with Photoshop while retaining layers. It can handle vector and Bitmap.

My suggestion would be to Trace your artwork lines in vector format, save that file and export just the lines with a transparent background as (PNG 24 format or a TIFF format). You can then import your lines onto a layer in Photoshop which you then lock so that you can't accidentally mess up that layer. You can then make blank layers underneath your line artwork which you can then apply your colours and mess with effects while your lines are visible on top as a guide.

Their is also a stripped down, cheaper and more simplified version of Photoshop called Photoshop elements if you want to take "baby steps" first.

Anyway hope this helps a little and good luck! Oh and check out a community website called Deviantart.com. It's free and a lot of artists post tutorials & their work up there. Most of them would be willing to give you pointers if you run into problems.

Yes do, especially if you are a fan of manga. It has templates for page layouts as well. It was originally developed for creating digital manga in Japan but it's good for creating western comics too. It's only drawback is it was designed for black & white artwork so for colour your best bet is to export your line work and do the colouring in Photoshop. Their is a "Manga studio for dummies" book for it as well.

You can get Stylus Inputs for your PC which would allow you to draw on the screen like pencil on paper. Our banner of the Chaos Cruiser ramming the Imperial Battleship was done this way.

Also give GIMP a look

You could *find* them free.

If you are looking at hardware, Wacom makes a product called the "Inkling". It's a ball point pen that is pressure sensitive and draws with regular ink on paper, the catch is it relays information to a receiver while you draw. In the end you have an ink drawing and a digital line version which you can download from the pen to your PC. The digital version can be saved in layers as you draw and can be edited afterwards. Their is a demo on YouTube somewhere.

I've got one of those, but I dont use it, I personally hate drawing, I always use the pen tool and edit the anchor point after to draw anything.
