Vindicare. The name alone is only whispered in the halls of the Adeptus Terra. The Officio Assassinorum empolys these deadly dealers of long-ranged, precision death to stop an uprising/disaster or war before it even starts. This is the tale of one such operative and his journey to becoming the Officio Assassinorum Vindicare Temple's very finest.

Exitus Rifles are well feared and renowned by two groups of people. those with the authority or privilage to know of it's workings, and those who's last moments are spent wondering why their brains are exploding out of the back of their skulls. Garvious has one. He likes the fact it's silver.

'Most beneficient Lord and Master' began the servitor, his voice a mechanical drone, punctuated by occasional random inflections, 'Message Incoming' The servitor's mechanical jaw then dropped agape, to reveal a holo-pict screen of an old recording of a man dressed in what clearly identified him as a an Imperial Governor. 'Rynioth IV's PDF has suffered losses combatting an Ork infestation' the man spoke, sternly in a very strong, proud accent, 'they fear the horde is gathering around a single individual and gaining power and momentum, if help is not despatched forhwith, this system may witness a Waaaaagh! My Lord. We Request Astartes intervention, or failing that, the Imperial Guard.' The holo-pict then faded, and the Servitor's closed in a slightly awkward fashion. The High Lord's brow furrowed. He asked but one question, 'Servitor, What is the date stamp on this recording?' '978 M.40, 20 years ago, most beneficient Lord and Master.' the servitor responded in it's unnatural tone, 'Then it is too late to save the planet, the Orks likely have it now, but we can save the system.' He paused to think for but a moment, 'Despatch a Prioritum Maximus message to the Officio Assassinorum, they will know what to do.' The high lord could have sworn he heard the Servitor sniggering about him making up 'Prioritum Maximus' on the spot, but surely it hadn't... It was a servitor after all...

Garvious sat in his quarters. They were barren and cold, poorly lit and uncomfortable, but for Garvious it was home, and all he had ever known. As far as Garvious knew he had but one purpose. To kill the Heretic, to deliver the Emperor's justice to all who opposed it, and those that deserved it. He screwed up his latest orders parchment and aimed for his waste-containment recepticle. he felt the slight breeze in the room, he compensated for it. He arced his shot at what he knew was just the right angle, relaxed his wrist for just the right power, drew back his arm, and waited for the tell-tale soft clang of parchment on metal. Nothing. Garvious looked at his hand, and then at the waste-container. He missed. He had never missed.

Garvious sat inside his one-man Drop-Pod, with him his Exitus Rifle, and his Exitus Pistol, his specially chosen ammunition. Everything else he needed he was wearing, he had his Spy Mask, with it's in-built auto-senses, and his Synskin, constantly shifting colour to fit his surrounding environment, he shut his eyes and felt the heavy shunt of thrusters, followed by the brief feeling of weightlessness, then the extreme heat of atmospheric entry, then the annoyance that he'd left his grenades in his room. He then felt a slight pang of annoyance as he realized he had taken the pins with him. Garvious sighed softly and braced for impact. Details of his target were being fed into his mask, Warboss Gitgrabba Zogzwakka, 'Butcher of the Ryndiam System', the beast would never see his death coming. all it would take to end this Waaaagh was a single shot from the Exitus Rifle, and Garvious was ready to deliver the Emperor's Judgement, after all, He had never missed.

As the pod cracked open, Garvious' Spy Mask immediately compensated for the light change, quickly he got to his feet and readied his gear, holstering his Pistol and slinging his rifle, he knelt and allowed himself a moment to plan his route to a perfect position for his perfect kill-shot. His mask showed all the data he needed, Three-Dimensional maps and data feeds, the mask's systems hacked into local communications, and orbiting Starship comms. The Orks were truly becoming a blight, and the Warboss was now 'brordcastin' 'is werds'. His belligerence was such that garvious had to turn down his monitoring volume to bear it. The assassin listened to see if he could gain any useful intel from the Ork. He could not. He did however hear several different anatomically impossible uses for a Kroot's head and a Guardsman's rectum, at least, Garvious hoped it was impossible... it sounded nasty.

Garvious was renowned as a master of stealth and camouflage, his synskin suit changed it's colour constantly, to better hide him, and he had never been spotted by any of his many, many targets before. He allowed himself the satisfaction of being the best. He was a holy specter, the ghost of the Emperor's Judgement, he was also being watched by a young girl, and had had been since he landed. On top of her Father. 'Who are you, and where is my Father?' Garvious attempted to ignore the child, and move away when he noticed she had pulled an Auto-Pistol and was pointing it straight at him. Later, Garvious would wonder why a young girl had come to own a firearm, but for now, he knew he needed to diffuse the situation. The assassin motioned for the girl to follow, making it very clear that he intended to execute her if she continued to be an interruption. His Spy Mask beamed an image of a nearby Bell-Tower on to the ground. 'I know that place, the Tower of His Mighty Glory, I can take you.' Left little choice, Garvious accepted with a slight incline of his head, and the girl started to skip off in the direction of the tower. This was either a huge mistake or a stroke of genius, Garvious felt his grenade pins. he wished they were grenades, this problem might have resolved itself differently, and much more explosively. He considered shooting her, after all he had never missed, but she was useful for now.

The Tower of His Mighty Glory had taken a full two days to climb get to and climb. During which time the little girl, now having introduced herself as Marena, had not stopped explaining how she hadn't really liked her father anyway, and that she thought it was pretty funny he got taken out by a drop-pod. She never did explain how she came to own a military grade firearm, but by this point such small details seemed inconsequential, there were larger, more important tasks at hand. The death of an Ork warboss being foremost among them.

The kill-shot would be made from the north-most side of the tower, the perfect view and only 2 miles to the target, no problem for Garvious, He had never missed. The Ork Warboss stood atop a mass of junk and looted Imperial vehicle parts, soon he would be slain. Scoping up his Exitus rifle he saw his mark, his auto-senses immediately started to calculate distance, compensated for gravitational pull, and the rotation of the planet, he loaded a single Turbo-Penetrator round, and compensated for the weight and self-propulsion of the shell. Garvious synchronized his breathing to his heartbeat, and gently squeezed the trigger, there was the familiar crack, brief flash and then...

Nothing.

Garvious sighed heavily.

'You missed!' said the little girl, almost mockingly, she then started laughing 'all that build up, and you missed!' Garvious knew he had missed, so did the girl. She could not know he missed, she was a witness, with one swift movement garvious quickly looked left, then right, then behind him, and then pushed the girl off of the tower, to a 600-foot fall. As she rapidly gained speed, so had the Turbo-Penetrator, by pure chance, half a mile back from it's intended target it struck the activation rune of a still-functioning wreck of a Warlord Titan's Volcano Cannon. . It happened to be aiming right for a certain Ork Warlord... The colossal weapon, charged, then fired as it's generator overloaded and detonated, killing Orks by the Thousand, the massive plasma surge interrupted a rather gratuitous recounting of unusual ways to combine space marine Power Armor with the most delicate parts of Eldar physiology, Vaporizing the belligerent beast in an instant. 'Lucky...' said the little girl, before impacting the ground with a sickening and quite final thud.

Garvious basked in the knowledge that he had done the Emperor's work this day, and once again had liberated a world from the grasp of that which would destroy it. He was never in doubt. He had never missed.

Garvious stood in a rocky crevasse. He had been there for days. No food, no sleep. Just the arid winds of Percipus One and the unrelenting sun. His exitus rifle showed no sign of the harsh conditions he had endured, it gleamed in the sunlight. His cold dead eyes stared out from inside his spy mask and continued to survey the dead landscape that had not changed in all that time. The chameleon qualities of his synskin made him near invisible to anyone that might have come upon him as he sat unmoving, watching the landscape.

A small skull came skittering across the desert, hovering just above the ground. Metal additions jutted out from the loosely hanging spine and the eyes. It was a small skull, easily able to fit into the palm of Garvious' hand. A voice came force from the servo-skull, it was heavily distorted by digitization, but sounded almost childlike.

"Survey complete. Best lines of fire have been extrap-" it paused. "Extropap." The skull paused again. "Figured out." Garvious' mask was filled with the information gathered. He quickly analyzed the data it had procured on population trends, the layout of the city, meteorological information on the region, and most importantly vantage points and behavioral observations on his target.

Father Johanus Terapis, as he was known here, had made quite the name for himself. He preached of a new religion, and decried the Emperor. His followers were fanatics and zealots, and seemed to be without end. The inquisition had delved into the man, but could find nothing before his sudden appearance and even more spontaneous rise in power and fame. The Way of Light had spread planet wide seemingly overnight, and outlying systems already had emissaries spreading the degenerate lies of this tainted madman. Sending a force would be too costly, so they had sent an Assassin.

Garvious did not care about any of this. To him it was a mark. A job to be completed in the service of the Emperor, and there was no one more suited to the task than he. Standing he began to make his way towards Klietus, or what had become known now as the Seat of Light. The servo skull bobbed behind him, it sounded as though it was singing.

"The Sandman's coming in his train of cars
With moonbeam windows and with wheels of stars
So hush you little ones and have no fear
The man-in-the-moon he is the engineer."

He turned to look and silence ensued. He glared at the servo-skull, and for the briefest moment thought it looked sheepish, or shy, but that wasn't possible for a skull with no jaw... wasn't it? Garvious turned his attention back to the mission at hand. Like a ghost he made his way through the city, none noted his passing.

Today Father Terapis was going to address his flock, and Garvious' job was to strike him down with the wrath of the Emperor. It was simple. With a single bullet he would stop what an entire army could not. If Garvious had any emotions he would smile. As he turned a corner he was face to face with one of the locals.

"What? Who are you?" The man said frightened, as he was presented with the black clad form of a Vindicare assassin. Garvious looked down at the man and titled his head in a manner that expressed the man should forget he had seen the assassin and carry on about his business lest something unspeakable befall him.

"Understood." The man said and quickly scurried off. The servo-skull looked at him. Garvious was sure it looked quizzical. He quickly continued on his way. It did not take long for Garvious to get to his vantage point. He lay down upon the roof of a tall building that overlooked the main square of the town where Terapis was to speak. The address was not until the following day, but he knew it was best to be prepared, much was riding on his bullet.

The day and night passed uneventfully as Garvious watched the square, waiting. Briefly he thought he heard a sound akin to snoring come from the servo-skull, and it had tried to nestle against him.

As the sun rose the crowd began together, a mighty throng of people that filled the courtyard like ants. It was almost time. He just had to wait for the opportune moment.

Terapis arrived to a great heralding of cheers. He was a fat man, wearing gaudy robes of gold and crimson. His face looked petulant, as though he was perpetually constipated. Garvious wasn't sure why he made that observation, but felt it relevant. When the masses quieted down Terapis began his speech of 'the Light.' Garvious listened with his deadly rifle aimed at the false priest, waiting for the right moment.

"And the supposed Emperor lies in his tomb. Why should we praise him? Where is his power?" As soon as those words left the preist's mouth Garvious gently squeezed the trigger on his exitus rifle. THe rifle that he had trained with countless hours, that had been built specifically for him to maximize his skill and turn him into an unrivaled weapon for the Imperium. The round left the barrel with a quiet hiss as it whizzed towards its target.

At the same moment that Garvious' finger pulled the trigger a figure moved behind the priest, raising a small pistol and firing a poisoned dart into his neck. The Callidus assassin had been infiltrating the priest's retinue for weeks, waiting for this opportunity to strike him down publicly, and send a message. Her sense of accomplishment was cut short as Garvious' round hit her between the eyes, blasting her head to pulp. Both she and the priest fell together.

Garvious eyed the resultant damage, and tilted his head ever so slightly, then let out a sight as he stood.

"You missed." The servo-skull pointed out. Garvious looked back at the dead priest, then at the servo-skull, before drawing his pistol and blasting the skull to pieces. He never missed.
