If your looking to start with 40K then get the paint set. It's a really good opportunity to start and comes with 5 Space Marines.

From there get a Battleforce

The starter set is a great idea and a good starting point (duh). Space Marines can be very easy to paint to a table top standard (that is to say they look great from 3' away). I find shading with washes to be the best way. If you go GW paints they have some of the best under their range of shades. These watery paints soak into the recesses of a model and add shading with almost no effort on your part.

For example I want to paint a Crimson Fist. Start with white primer undercoat. Then paint the entire model with Kantor Blue (one of their base colours, the other really good GW paint style). After that you could dry brush the entire model with Alitoc Blue before shading the whole model with Drakenhof Nightshade.

Dry brushing is where you wipe almost all the paint off the brush and then drag it across the model. When done right you only catch the raised surfaces. You can use a large brush and be fairly violent with your technique and still have a very nice effect. For an example see my Imperial Navy fleet that I posted here, it was 85% dry brushing with a large tank brush. The shading coat after will both take the edge off the dry brushing and make the recesses darker.

The above will get you a basic nice blue over all the model. Changes the colours as you see fit (I'm just guessing on the colours as they are all new and I haven't used any yet). From there just paint metal with a silver you like and shade it with a black wash. Pick out any details you like and done!

I just got an email from GW about their new paint line. They describe them as "Magic in paint form". You might want to wait until the new paints are widely available. I'm going to :)

Just an FYI, you can preorder the new 40k paint set:

Looks like the new "complete set" is already sold out. It had one pot of every color of the new paint for the low low price of $596.

Low price of $536, that's not very low.

Don't bother with a full set, stick to the starter with the marines. You will have too many colours and not know how to use them anyway. Stick to the basics and learn brush control as well as dry brushing and washing before you go crazy and buy a couple hundred paints.

Agree with the most part.

I do my highlighting with a fine brush though, wet paint (watered down) and build the layers. I find dry brushing isn't clean enough and doesn't get every single highlight. Saying that, I'm attempting to push each marine past that basic 'tabletop standard'.

GW now actually sell highlight paint so there's no need to water regular paint down.
