Question,

I have never been bothered with the model bases much but i have decided i want to start to do some nice bases.

I cant find where to buy the little bits like pieces of other units, i dont really want to dismantle my other models to make the bases, i have seen a friend buy them but i have no clue where from?

anyone know a good place?

I used to never base models like you, then I took an arro-... No I wont go there.

Right I only recently started basing, GW sells a small box set of basing materials: sand, grass, small gravel, larger gravel. All I do is use large gravel, covers the base, little mess, amd you paint it whatever colour you want afterwards.

Process:
Build model and attached to base,
Using a large unwanted brush cover the base in PVA glue, use a smaller unwanted brush to scrape off any glue that gets on the model, also wipe PVA off the side of the base if it gets there,
Then you literaly dip the model into the gravel (its usually brought in plastic container (leave it in there))
When dipping it in twist the model so it goes deep then when you take it out hold it sideways so excess gravel falls back in container, then gently blow on gravel to remove more excess gravel.
Use the small brush to whipe off loose gravel on the model,
Leave to dry, cleam up resultant mess, after several hours brush the top layer with large brush to remove more excess gravel,
Then spray and ect
When painting always drybrush, look at my Blood Angels in the showcase thread for examples of what it looks like, also buy cheap PVA, does the same thing and GW's version is a rippoff, make sure its thick and gloopy.
 
And those pieces from other units like heads and ect are brought in the box set.
